Some Last Notes...
In the first semester, the Guidance Office staff processed more than 600 application or transcript packets for seniors. Haven’t applied yet? Seniors who still need to see a counselor to help with post secondary planning should come to guidance to sign up. COUNTY COLLEGE APPLICATIONS should be filed NOW. Applications may be filed through the Guidance Office or on-line. If filing online, a form must be completed to send transcripts and letters of recommendation. Seniors have been given a packet of information on the Financial Aid process. (There was a meeting for seniors as well.) If not already completed, families should be filing the
FAFSA now. Students who have received acceptances and/or scholarships should record that information in the Guidance Office Post-Secondary Plans Book. While most students have succeeded in their coursework, all students and parents should keep an eye on any “D’s” which were first semester averages, as well as the upcoming third and fourth quarter grades in those courses. It takes very little for a “D” to fall to an “F”. Final exams should be taken very seriously. In the third quarter, parents of seniors who failed courses for the first semester will be notified by the guidance office as to each student’s status regarding graduation requirements.
Naviance
The Guidance Office is now using the Naviance system to monitor document submission
for college applications. This system will submit documents electronically to colleges
for students who so choose. Plans are being developed to use the post-secondary
career and college planning modules with underclassmen in the future.
Senior Parents
Lists of scholarships continue to be posted in classrooms, and on the school website.
Student athletes appying to NCAA Division I and II schools should contact Mr. Powers
for Clearinghouse information/applications if they have not already done so. ROTC
Scholarship deadlines vary by branch of service but usually occur in the fall. Internet
resources include: www.collegeboard.com,
www.fastweb.com,
www.ncaa.org/cbsa, www.hesaa.org,
www.mapping-your-future.org, and www.finaid.org.
Applications...Seniors should complete their applications/request for transcripts
and bring them to Guidance with any fees and $2.00 for postage for each (additional
charges after 8) a minimum of two weeks before deadlines. If filing on line, the
same timetable applies. Students will be given information as to filing for financial
aid in December.
Strategic Plan for Improvement
Gloucester Catholic is in the 2nd year of our newest strategic plan, developed as
part of the accreditation process for the Middle States Association of Colleges
and Secondary Schools. There are 4 objectives....
By the Spring of 2015, Gloucester Catholic students will demonstrate
- increased facility in verbal reasoning and analytical writing
- increased facility in quantitative reasoning and critical thinking
- increased knowledge of and commitment to Catholic Christian living
- increased...ability to construct viable post-secondary plans
Workshops have been scheduled into the 2009-2010 school year to enable faculty and
administration to work on action plans and activities integral to achieving the
objectives.
Post-Secondary Planning Process
The post-secondary planning process can be nerve-wracking in a sound economy. Last
year proved very difficult, though eventually successful, for many families. Being
proactive, thinking "outside the box," and balancing fiscal projections with a big
dollop of hopefulness are key elements in accomplishing any task, including career
and college planning, in today's world. The counseling staff of GCHS is available
to help. In addition to focusing on earning good grades and improving test scores,
seniors should, this autumn, search on the Internet, visit colleges (2 year, 4 year,
public, private), meet with college reps visiting GCHS, go to college fairs, etc.
Registration for the Class of 2014
Parochial sending school will process applications for current students who are
applying to GCHS.
Public school students and others may call in early January for applications.
