Common Mistakes and Their Solutions

Listed below are some of the more common mistakes made by GCHS students in their writing, and guidelines to help avoid those mistakes in the future.

Problem

its - it's its - shows ownership (Its paw was bleeding.)
it's - is a contraction for "it is" (It's going to need stitches.)

Hint: If you can't logically put the words "it is" where you want to use "it's", then you want "its" -- not "it's."

there - their - they're there - generally refers to a place

their - is the possessive form of they

they're - is a contraction for "they are." [Hint: If you can't logically put the words "they are" where you want to use "they're", then you don't want this form.

"should of," instead of "should have" "should of" is NEVER correct
