The players (left to right) are: Robbie Allesandrine (Monmouth), John Brue (Saint Joseph’s), Brett Tenuto (Stony Brook), Joe Brooks (East Carolina) and Patrick Kane (Old Dominion).

Phase 1 of GCHS Athletic Complex Approved

Gloucester Catholic High School cleared a major hurdle on Tuesday, November 2, when the Deptford Township Planning Board gave final approval for Phase 1 of our new athletic complex project, which will include multiple practice fields (soccer, football etc.) for our athletes.

This enables GCHS to schedule work on this site, which sits near Gloucester County College, as soon as possible!

The Board also gave Gloucester Catholic preliminary approval on phases 2 and 3, which means the GCHS engineering firm can begin environmental studies and plan other preliminary details on these phases of the project, which will include multiple varsity and sub-varsity fields.

More updates will be posted here in the future.

Football Reunion Brings Back Memories!

Gloucester Catholic High School held a reunion of former football players and coaches at McMichael’s Pub in Gloucester City, New Jersey on Saturday, October 29, and the gathering capped off an exciting homecoming weekend for our local community.

Among those on hand for the reunion were two members of Gloucester Catholic ‘s first-ever football team –Jack Hennessey, ‘48, and Bob O’Neill, ’51. Hennessey was a senior and O’Neill a freshman on the Rams’ 1947 club.

Coaches in attendance included current skipper Tony Garcyzinski and former coach Tom Iacovone, who is also president of the GCHS Alumni Association. Principal John Colman was also on hand to greet the former players.

All told, 45 individuals were in attendance.

The blustery, inclement weather didn’t stop the Rams from claiming a 26-6 victory over Highland Regional in the Homecoming game at Gloucester City High. Elliott McCummings paved the way for Gloucester Catholic with two touchdown runs as the Ram built a commanding 20-0 halftime lead.

Gloucester Catholic Alumni President and former football coach Tom Iacovone, ‘70 (left) shows off the plans for the proposed new athletic complex to Bob O’Neil, ’51 (center), and Jack Hennessey, ’48 (right), both members of GCHS’s first football team in 1947. All were present for a recent GCHS football coaches and players’ reunion on October 29.

Wade Takes Over as Gloucester Catholic Wrestling Coach

Geoff Wade has been named the new head wrestling coach at Gloucester Catholic High School for the 2011-2012 season.

Wade served previously as an assistant under Bill Lucas since 1999 and was formerly a standout wrestler at Woodbury High School and Gloucester County College.

The Woodbury resident, who owns a personal training fitness studio in Riverton, is excited about taking over a team that has several returning sophomores and juniors on the roster.

"This is a great opportunity to develop a winning culture here, and these wrestlers have the talent to accomplish that," said Wade, whose team competes in the Tri-County Conference Diamond Division. "I’m looking forward to the new season."

Coach Courtney Murnane Earns 100th Career Win

Congratulations to Courtney Murnane, who has been Gloucester Catholic's co-head coach with Kate Ormsby since the 2006 season, for earning her 100th career win when the Rams posted a 3-1 victory at Woodstown in a Tri-County Conference match on October 6.

Elyse Virella scored twice and Shea Sulit had one goal for Gloucester Catholic. The win gave the Rams an 8-0-2 record at the time. They are among South Jersey’s top soccer teams according to The Courier-Post and the Inquirer.

Coach Murnane is a graduate of Gloucester Catholic and LaSalle University, and played soccer.

Rams Honored by NJSIAA

Gloucester Catholic’s sports program was honored by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association as being disqualification free in the 2010-2011 school year.

NJSIAA Executive Director Steven J. Timko released the annual list of DQ-free programs in early October and congratulated Gloucester Catholic for its fine efforts in sportsmanship activities for the 2010-2011 school year.

The Rams are a member of the Tri-County Conference and participate in NJSIAA Non-Public playoff competition in boys and girls sports.

Barth to be honored

Coach Dennis Barth will be honored by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Award for his outstanding service to young men and women of New Jersey. Coach Barth led the 2010 Rams to their 14th state crown, the most in New Jersey history, and USA Today ranked the young team 24th in the nation. Congratulations, Coach Barth!

Girls' Volleyball Has Great Season

The GCHS Girls’ Volleyball Team ended the season with the Olympic Conference Championship and made it to state tournament play.

Soccer Success

The Ram Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer Teams are Tri-County Champs.

"The Pit" Transformed

The "Pit" is now known as the "Golden Palace" thanks to the efforts of a group of dedicated parents, led by Ed Casey and Coach Geoff Wade. Donated paint, construction materials and a lot of time and talent have made Gloucester Catholic’s wrestling room into a showcase. Special recognition goes to Mark Morgan, Joe Tohanczyn, Bob Wethman, Mary Agnes and Brian McPeak, as well as the Koehlers and the Lees.

GCHS Softball Team Wears State Crown

The GCHS Girls’ Softball Team not only wears the New Jersey Parochial B crown, but the Newark Star-Ledger ranks the Lady Rams as the Number One Team in South Jersey. Coach Joe Matranga’s team was also listed as the number three team among non-public schools in New Jersey and the number seven among all teams in the state.

On June 5, the Gloucester Catholic girls beat Immaculate Conception of Lodi, 11-1, in the state Non-Public B softball championship game the way they’ve won all year. Batters one-through-nine hit the ball and senior pitcher Nicole Hagerty did her part to keep the opposition off the bases.

Congratulations to these outstanding players!

Colleen O’Donnell, Nicole Hagerty, Christina Matranga, Shannon Corrado,Samantha Cappello, Shayla Giosia, Brianna Roderiguez, Mary Kate Lally, Olivia Lawrence, Caitlyn Eltzholtz, Katie O’Shea, Julianne Justice, Carly Todd and Abby Merryman

At the end of the season, Coach Joe Matranga announced his retirement. Joe leaves a record of 43-16 and led his team to the 2009 South Jersey Non-Public A Final.

Rams End Season with National Ranking and State Crown

It was an unbelievable year for Gloucester Catholic baseball. Not only did the Rams win the State Parochial B title, but USA Today ranked the team 24th in the nation. The Rams won their 14th state crown, the most in New Jersey history, and took the Courier- Post Cup and Gloucester County Times “Team of Year” title. Not bad for a team with only one starting senior!

With six sophomore starters, the Rams took the NJSIAA State Non- Public B title with a 7-5 win over Moorestown-Beard at Toms River North. Freshman pitcher Mike Shawaryn went in and pitched the final three outs in relief of junior left-hander, Cody Brown. Sophomore left-hander Elliot McCummings was 2 for 4, with two doubles and two RBIs.

Throughout the season, the Rams took veteran leadership from senior catcher, Greg Haines. Cody Brown finished the season 9-0 and was 4-0 in the team’s four postseason games. First year junior pitcher, Jeff Paglione, also made an impact and contributed to the 24-7 season.

Two of the standouts on this talented team are junior Steve Wilgus and sophomore Joe Brooks. This season Steve hit .367, but walked 32 times for a .532 on-base average. He added six doubles, two triples, two homers, 23 RBIs, 37 runs and 20 stolen bases. Joe split time between second and third as one of the team’s top hitters, finishing at .466 with eight doubles, a triple, 29 RBIs, 37 runs, 29 walks and 13 steals. The 2010 GCHS team was one of the youngest in the area and Coach Dennis Barth will see most of these players back next year. With several team members having two years to play, the GCHS team will sure be fun to watch.

Rams’ Lacrosse Future Looks Bright

Ending the season with a NJSIAA playoff berth and a strong core of players returning next season, the future looks bright for the Gloucester Catholic Boys Lacrosse Team. The boys played an 18 game independent schedule, finishing the season 9-9. The team made history winning their first game 7-6, in overtime, over Middle Township. Ryan Turner led the team in goals with 40, his brother Jake led the team in assists (44) and total points (79). Captains were junior Kevin Kohout and seniors Joe Amorosi and Alessio Azzari.

Our Mission

Graduating

Gloucester Catholic High School empowers young men and women to become faithful citizens and to develop in all aspects of life: spiritual, intellectual, moral, emotional, social and physical.

Our goal is that our graduates continue their education and carry with them a guide for Catholic Christian living: vibrant faith, respect for human dignity, strong belief in the values of family, promotion of justice, service to community and country, and the desire to make a positive difference in society.

Gloucester Catholic High School is enriched by a legacy of Catholic tradition spanning four generations. We draw strength and inspiration from our past as we make an exceptional Catholic education available and accessible to our future leaders.
