Lady Rams Soccer Brings Home State Crown

Congratulations to Coach Ormsby and the Lady Rams...

Gloucester Catholic's girls soccer team (19-1-1) has captured its third state championship in five years with a 2-0 victory over Villa Walsh in the NJSIAA Non-Public B final. On a rain-soaked Thursday evening at The College of New Jersey, in a game halted by lightning, Gloucester Catholic did it again, this time with a 2-0 victory.

Rams X-Country Takes Conference Honors

Congratulations...

The GCHS boys and girls cross country teams finished with their biggest team ever, 47 runners, and one of their best seasons in school history. The Girls Cross Country team won the Tri-County Conference Diamond Division with a 7-0 record. The Boys Cross Country team finished second in the conference with an 8-1 record.

The Rams teams had nine All-Conference runners.

1979 Rams Football Team Honored

GCHS Honored the 1979 State Championship Football team....

Members of the 1979 Ram Football Team gathered on Homecoming Day to reminisce and celebrate their State Championship season. From left: Jim McIntyre, Harry Walker, Anthony Pacifico, Mike Barnes, John Yowler, Jerry Green, Tom Reed, Bill Glassman, Wayne Jensen and Steve Underwood.

'79 Lady Rams Reunite

’79 Lady Rams Reunite and Recall Four Straight State Championships.

The glory days of Gloucester Catholic girls’ basketball were recalled when members of the 1979 State Championship team gathered back in the gym for a reunion of one of the greatest teams in South Jersey history.

The Lady Rams went 28-1 that season and won their fourth state Group 1 championship. This team’s four year record was 108 wins and 11 losses.

The team was lead by Reenie Mahon (23.6 ppg); Theresa McGlade (14 pp.) and Annette Angelotti (13 ppg) The other starters were Lori DiPilla and Mary Beth Shikitano. Coached by Tom Inzillo, the team was so strong that senior Katie McPeak, who came off the bench, earned a basketball scholarship to Saint Joseph’s. Trish McNutt, who was a freshman and a future all-South Jersey point guard, was a JV starter and deep varsity reserve.

In their four playoff games, the Lady Rams won by an average margin of 24.5 points, culminating with a 77-46 win over Eastern Christian in the Group 1 state final.

Annette Angelotti Reiter, assistant coach at Rowan University, organized the reunion which was hampered by an impending blizzard. Almost all members of the ’79 team returned to the gym to watch the current Lady Rams play against visiting Moorestown. A gathering followed at the newly refurbished O’Donnell’s Restaurant in Gloucester.

Hall of Famers

GCHS Alum named to South Jersey Sports Hall of Fame.

The Albert J. Carino Boys Basketball Club of South Jersey recently honored George Rieder with induction into the South Jersey Hall of Fame. George was a four-sport standout in the early 1950’s, playing football, basketball, baseball and track.

In 1954, George was named to the All-South Jersey first team in both football and basketball. George was a four-year varsity basketball player and during his career scored 1,013 points. During the 1955 season, he scored 41 points against Wildwood Catholic.

Following his playing days as a Ram, George went on to St. Francis Prep in Spring Grove, PA where he played football and basketball. He later played basketball at Villanova where he once scored 45 points in a game against St. Joseph’s.

Fellow Rams Dick Sheldon ‘54, Dick Talley ’57 and Carl Schoenborn ‘55 attended the Hall of Fame ceremony in February.
