ENGLISH II

RATIONALE:
This course is designed to give students an awareness and appreciation of the historical development of American Literature. The literature is examined within the context of its response to societal influences. Vocabulary study is a combination of the vocabulary unique to the literary works and preparation for standardized testing, utilizing the skills of analyzing words according to base words, the use of prefixes and suffixes, and applying context clues to understand words.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

English II is a survey course of American Literature, beginning with the study of early American Literature and taking the student through the historical time periods, continuing up to and including modern American Literature. Representative selections from various genres in each time period are examined. Major work included is The Great Gatsby. Grammar is emphasized within the framework of composition. Vocabulary work is a continuation of the Houghton Mifflin vocabulary series, in addition to the vocabulary from the literary selections. A term paper will be assigned.

TEXTS:
bulletThe American Experience, Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 2002.
bulletVocabulary for Achievement – Fourth Course, Great Source Education Group, 1998
bulletSharon Sorenson’s A Quick Reference to the Research Paper, NY: Amsco School Publications, 1999

EVALUATION:
Instruction is guided by the General Instructional Objectives, and measurement of student learning is guided by Specific Learning Objectives, both included in the course proficiency. At the end of the semester, a common exam based on this proficiency is given to all students of this subject. The grade for this exam equals one-fifth of the semester grade.

Through the course of each quarter, students are evaluated on the basis of tests, quizzes, writing assignments, homework, projects, and other activities. The third quarter grade includes evaluation of a major research paper which is weighted as two major test grades. With a 70% as a passing grade, it is expected that a minimum of 80% would pass tests and 85% would pass quizzes.
