AP Biology - Dr. Jay Simmons

Purpose:

AP Biology is Biology plus. It is a college credit course and is accompanied by the same difficulties that one would have in college. In addition to getting college credits, students will find it as a great preparation for their higher education studies. In the spring of each year the student will take the College Board Exam. Our Guidance Department will administer the exam. There is a charge.

Requirements:

  1. Students have a basic understanding of General Biology and Chemistry
  2. A College level text will be given; this text is a state text and students will not be charged. A Barron’ Guide will also be used.
  3. Students should study the assigned text and do the quiz and challenge questions.
  4. Taking notes in lecture is essential and helpful.
  5. Labs are needed and students must submit reports.
  6. Good study habits and a little burning of the midnight oil will go a long way.

Evaluation:

  1. Tests will be given on the chapters studied. Because of time constraints and the great amount of material covered several chapters will be included in the tests. The questions will be similar to those in the College Board Exam.
  2. A lab grade will be given based on the submitted lab reports.
  3. An optional paper can be done for each quarter. Topics to be announced.
  4. A term paper on Ecology is due in the Spring.

Grade:

  1. Test average + lab+ optinal paper = quarter grade
  2. Quarter grade+ quarter grade + semester exam+ semester grade

College Board Exam

The school will notify students during the summer break. The grade are 1-5. Colleges will use these grades to determine placement.

Best wishes for a great year.

Dr. Simmons
