Guidance Update - Fall 2008

SENIORS
Post-Secondary Planning Guide was distributed in June. If you need another copy, see your counselor.

The first day of a new school year brings with it lots of hope and many opportunities for student success. However, students can hit some rough spots as the year progresses. It is important to know that help is available if it is needed.

Students may come into the Guidance Office to sign up to see a counselor and parents may call as well. Emergencies are handled as quickly as possible. Because of time constraints though, most calls/emails will be returned within 24 hours and often after the school day ends. Other support services for students are available.

Mr. Ed Beckett, Assistant Principal for Spiritual Formation, will have his office in the Annex. Fr. Colozzi's office will be in the Main Building.

Support/counseling services work only if there is communication as well as cooperation between home and school. Please, let us know if something is going on in your student's life that may have an impact on academic performance or personal well-being.

The fall months are filled with many important dates to remember. One of the first is the issuing of color-coded Interim Progress Reports. The grades are approximate and are intended to alert students and problems if a problem exists. If no remediation is taken, a student may fail. Parents can help by contacting teachers, monitoring student work and encouraging more quality study time. Struggling students should be encouraged to use their Agenda organizers, the help and links on this website, as well as to seek after-school help with teachers or tutoring through the National Honor Society (contact Kathy Coghlan).

Senior Parents .... Lists of scholarships and visiting colleges continue to be posted regularly on daily homeroom announcements and on this website.

Student athletes applying to NCAA Division I and II schools should contact Mr. Powers for Clearinghouse information/applications if they have not already done so. ROTC Scholarship deadlines vary by branch of service but usually occur in the Fall.

College Applications

Using the Post-Secondary Planning brochure or the Senior Checklist (both given to parents at the meeting in June) as a guideline, seniors should complete their applications and bring them to Guidance with the fees and $2.00 for postage for each (additional charges after 8)  a MINIMUM of two weeks before deadlines. If filing on-line, the same timetable applies. Students will be given information as to filing for financial aid in mid-December.
